Tribute

Judith Shannon Lynch, 81, of Milford, passed away on January 17, 2023 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a short illness with her family and friends at her side. Born on June 12, 1941 in Springfield, MA, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Anna (LaRose) Shannon.

Judith received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Boston College and Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Art in Women’s History from SUNY Binghamton.

Judith was one of the first faculty members in the Wilson Hospital Family Practice residency program in Johnson City, NY that began in 1972. She was a brilliant and enthusiastic practitioner and teacher in both the Family Practice program and in the Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University.

She then worked for many years as an advanced practice nurse in Binghamton, NY. She also served on the faculty of the Yale University School of Nursing, Quinnipiac University and Sacred Heart University where she developed and implemented their family nurse practitioner program. In recent years she practiced as a nurse practitioner with Naugatuck Valley Ear, Nose, and Throat Associates; Maven Health Care for Women; and with Brett Gerstenhaber MD LLC (Pulmonologist).  In addition, Judith was an expert reviewer for malpractice cases, a national and international speaker on ENT issues and allergies and a medical writer.

Judith's dedication to patients, their families and the community was unparalleled. One of her areas of expertise was in the development of comprehensive, efficient clinical charting systems that greatly facilitated holistic patient care delivery. A strong advocate of seeing and treating the whole person, she honored each patient as a unique individual. She was an outspoken proponent of women's rights as well as the rights and dignity of all people. Each patient coming to her for care was seen and heard, such was the depth and compassion embedded in the narrative health care she practiced. At the same time, Judith was heavily involved in advancing practice legislation for nurse practitioners.

Judith was also a Renaissance woman with deep interests in music, literature, art, photography, theater, film, history, and travel – which she shared with her many friends.  She was a member of several book and film groups and was active in professional nursing organizations.  She was a Charter Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and a member of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, American Nurses Association, New York State Nurses Association and the nursing honor society Sigma Theta Tau.

Judith was the beloved mother of David Lynch (Diane) and Beth Lynch Pisacreta (Vincent); grandmother of John Pisacreta, Emily Pisacreta, Alex Pisacreta and Justin Lynch (Amy); sister of George Shannon (Cecille); aunt to Valerie Thompson (husband Matthew and children Mary Shannon, Rachel and George); Michael (wife Brooke and children Grace, Mercy and Bella); Christopher (wife Lacey and children Isla and Tate) and friend of many. In addition to her family and friends, Judith is survived by her cat The Bandit.  Judith was predeceased by her daughter and best friend Beth.
