Donald Patrick Sweeney, Jr.

Donald Patrick Sweeney, Jr., 73, of Milford, beloved husband of Elizabeth Walsh-Sweeney, passed away on June 17, 2021. Born on November 13, 1947 in Milford, he was the son of the late George Donald and Florence R. Sweeney.

Donald graduated from Milford Primary School at Walnut Beach, he went on to Bullard Havens Technical School graduating class of 1965. He was drafted into the US Army in 1967. He did his basic training at Ft Gordon, Georgia. Donald was elected to OCS, at Ft. Sill 1969. He then went on to AIT for artillery school at Ft. Sill. Also, AIT helicopter pilot training at Ft. Hood, Texas. He then deployed to Vietnam. Lt. Sweeney was attached to Company “C” 6th Battalion 31st Infantry 9th Division.

Lt. Sweeney was assigned to joint services with the US Navy, Mobile Riverine Force on Mekong Delta. He was a recipient of 3 Purple Hearts, 2 Bronze Stars, Air Medal, Vietnam service medal with 60 device, and 2 overseas bars. Donald also received, from US Navy several accommodations for heroism during his Riverine tour. Lt. Sweeney was then promoted to rank of Captain 4 Jun 71. Captain Sweeney was assigned as company commander Ft. Edwards, Mass. Ft. Edwards was his last active duty assignment. Retired July 8th 1978.

Donald spent his time volunteering as a certified claims officer for the DAV. His objective was to help veterans receive all benefits they may be eligible for. He was also a 2nd Junior Vice for the Dept. of CT Disabled American Veterans.

Donald also leaves behind his son, Mark Sweeney. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Sweeney, Sr.

Family and friends may gather from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford. A service will take place at 5 p.m. that evening at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at Kings Highway Cemetery, 271 Cherry St., Milford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Donald’s name to the DAV Chapter 15, P.O. Box 3006, Milford, CT 06460.
